Civil partnerships and Dissolution

The introduction of the Civil Partnership Act in 2004 paved the way for the first Civil Partnership Ceremonies in December 2005 and same sex couples entering into a civil partnership now have parity with opposite sex couples who enter into a civil marriage ceremony on a variety of legal matters.

For people who may be contemplating entering into a Civil Partnership with their partner, they may wish to secure legal advice beforehand for clarification as to the legal implications of such a commitment. Some people may wish to seek the protection of a pre-partnership agreement which has the same impact of a pre-nuptial agreement. We have experience of preparing pre-partnership agreements for same-sex couples. Although pre-nuptial agreements are not binding under present English law, where they have been properly drawn up and meet the appropriate safeguards, the courts will attach a great deal of weight to the contents of such agreements when relationships break down.

At RJW we are partnered with organisations such as Stonewall and have links with organisations such as The Terrence Higgins Trust (THT).

Also as part of our commitment within this area we provide free seminars to the general public on pink law issues in association with publications such as Pinknews.co.uk and Pride Life. We also regularly contribute to these publications offering advice to their readership.
